Yesterday Ken and I said goodbye to Comet. It was a really tough day. Comet had been failing. His disease was no longer responding to medication and he was having difficulties getting around so we came to the decision it was time to let him go.
So yesterday afternoon the vet came out and euthanized him and we buried him on the hill above the pond. It was really, really hard and we were so sad to see him go.
Comet was such a good horse. He was opinionated but never mean. He was not the snuggly sort but he would allow us to steal hugs and kisses now and then.
He was so good to Bean. Bean was such a little guy when he came here and Comet took him under his wing and showed him the ropes. Bean would follow him around and pester him and look forward to seeing his big red friend each time they were parted.
I am not sure where we go when we die. But I hope Comet has gone to a place with lots of grass, some good horse friends and a strong, healthy body.
We buried Comet in the pasture that Bean and Orion now share. This morning I walked down to the see the boys and stopped by the grave site. At some time during the night the boys had investigated the grave. They walked through the fresh dirt and had laid down to roll. They left two distinct hairy body marks directly on his grave.
We all miss you Comet. You were such a good boy.

Sarah and Ken, I am so sorry about Comet. Thank you for giving him such a loving and happy life. You are in my thoughts. love, Ally
ReplyDeleteBeyond The Rainbow
ReplyDeleteAs much as I loved the life we had and all the times we played,
I was so very tired and knew my time on earth would fade.
I saw a wondrous image then of a place that's trouble-free
Where all of us can meet again to spend eternity.
I saw the most beautiful Rainbow, and on the other side
Were meadows rich and beautiful -- lush and green and wide!
And running through the meadows as far as the eye could see
Were animals of every sort as healthy as could be!
My own tired, failing body was fresh and healed and new
And I wanted to go run with them, but I had something left to do.
I needed to reach out to you, to tell you I'm alright
That this place is truly wonderful, then a bright Glow pierced the night.
'Twas the Glow of many Candles shining bright and strong and bold
And I knew then that it held your love in its brilliant shades of gold.
For although we may not be together in the way we used to be,
We are still connected by a cord no eye can see.
So whenever you need to find me, we're never far apart
If you look beyond the Rainbow and listen with your heart.
